Canadian intellectual property generated from federally funded research is often owned…Watch the video on Facebook
Canadian intellectual property generated from federally funded research is often owned and commercialized abroad. Jim Balsillie, the former co-CEO of RIM, along with countless other experts repeatedly tell the Science and Research committee the same thing. Their testimony stands in stark contrast to what the Minister of AI and Digital Innovation recently told us: “Guardrails” exist to ensure Canadians see the economic return on these investments. However, he couldn’t point to a single concrete example. Instead, we continue to see the same policy pattern of ‘investment’ announcements but no real strategy to ensure ownership and commercialization stays here in Canada. #innovation #kitchener

what has changed in the national landscape or not been done in the national landscape that causes companies to no longer be able to monetize and scale here and to head south instead? Well, we became much more fixated on foreign companies and giving Silicon Valley all they need or other international companies, you name it, around the world. When we were emerging with RIM, the orientation was to help grow Canadian companies and we felt it in Ottawa, we felt it in Queen's Park, whereas the last era has been much more about giving the keys to foreign companies and somehow there'll be some crumbs that fall off the table that benefit us. And when you do that, you lose all the wealth effects, you lose all the security effects and you're easy, vulnerable predation to strategic behavior, which is what we're experiencing now. I don't know what happened that we lost the plot about growing our own companies and growing our own country and growing our own economy. And it's very tragic because it's unavoidable, it's fixable, but the most vulnerable and the young are the ones that are changing the high paying the highest price. And so the nature of economic policies that we're dealing with now are not the same as they were 30 years ago. And it's such a shame because Canada has tremendous potential, but the policy approaches have failed all the citizens and entrepreneurs and business people with that potential.
