If we want true freedom to operate in AI and cloud compute, we need to back Canadian firms with strong IP positions, not remain dependent on foreign patent holders. Right now, nearly all patents issued in Canada go to foreign companies, leaving us without the room to build and compete. The solution is clear: invest in Canadian IP, strengthen patent‑collective tools, and give our innovators the ability to operate and scale here at home. #kitchenercentre #innovation #tech

If a government does fund sovereign compute, how can they ensure that companies they fund do still have the freedom to operate, in your opinion? So that's a very big challenge, is that you can't just push out Microsoft, Google, Amazon without having freedom to operate. And so you have to work with Canadian firms that have a strong IP position in AI and cloud compute to be able to push them out. But the IP and the patent systems are designed 90% of the patents issued out of the Canadian intellectual property office go to foreign firms. And so even in Canada, we have limited freedom to operate. And so we need things, patent collectives, resources to be able to capture that IP, generate that IP, and then have freedom to operate.
