Recently, I was on @cbckw891 with @craignorriscbc Craig Norris and I got the chance to talk about U.S. President Donald Trump and how his actions have affected Kitchener Centre. Because Canadians have not gotten the trade deal with the U.S. that they were promised, the auto workers in Kitchener are feeling it. Canada used to be the leader in EV technological innovation and Canada makes the best cars. Unfortunately, this government instead made a deal with China that floods Canadian markets with China made EVs. I believe in Canada’s auto sector and I believe that Canada makes the best cars and for the sake of our auto workers, I hope this government does too. #kitchenercentre #auto #ev

The impact of Kitchener Centre is that the residents in my riding that are in automotive or manufacturing are feeling it. They're feeling the fact that we do not have a deal right now, and we need a deal. And the EV trade that just happened, that affects our riding because what's the most unfortunate to me about it is that I speak of the innovation that happens and what's coming out of here is that we were the leader in EV technology. Canada was the leader in EV technology, but we didn't maintain our intellectual property. We didn't invest in it, and we didn't keep ourselves as the leader. And we make the best cars. Canada makes the best cars, and now we're putting extra strain on our automotive industry for something that we should have been the leaders in. And so that's the piece that really affects Kitchener, and it's incredibly important that we invest in our technology and our green technology that's coming out of these areas. What would you say if after the run of this part of the deal with China and the EV vehicles and the 49,000 vehicles, that China said, you know, this we've tested the waters, this is good. We'd like to build some manufacturing in Canada. What would you say to that? At the end of the day, we make the best cars ourselves in Canada. Our automotive industry, I believe in, and I hope our own government believes in our automotive industry as much as I do, and we need to support our Canadian economy in the manufacturing that we do here in Canada.

Ms. Joly, I'm going on to a new question, because I didn't get an answer and I don't want more of my limited time taken away. The second pillar was “create”. There have been a lot of claims today that our innovation ecosystem is alive, well and healthy, but the reality is that … Read more

that's completely untrue. We don't have the infrastructure we need for our computing capacity. We hold only 12% of our own Canadian patents, while 87% have become foreign-owned. Our commercialization is limited, costing us $75 billion yearly, or 2.7% of our GDP, and $5 billion in lost tax revenue. These failures are leading to a brain drain. Our talent is leaving our country because we cannot commercialize. What is your file doing to protect the intellectual property generated here in Canada and control our licensing terms to enable our own commercialization in sustained manufacturing?
