Recovery is possible. People do recover, rebuild their lives and go on to thrive. Today, on Recovery Day, we celebrate those who have walked that road and remind anyone still struggling that a different future is possible.

Thank you for joining us today for an incredibly important issue, the drug crisis across Canada. We're calling for the federal addictions and mental health investments to prioritize treatment. For too long, the liberal approach has put enormous emphasis on safe supply, a failed decriminalization scheme, and dangerous injection sites. And they have failed catastrophically. The last four to five years of my addiction was with Dilaudid, which is a painkiller. I have a friend down here whose doctor prescribes him 200 pills per week and 800 per month. From my perspective, safe supply is only perpetrate addiction. It doesn't help it. Day after day, we talk to people who want help, people who are sick of the pain and the struggle, people who want their families back, their jobs back, their dignity back, and their lives back. They are asking for detox, they are begging for rehabilitation, and they are crying out for one more chance. Families need resources, guidance, and systems that help support the people we love while they build the capacity to choose a different future. Today, I stand on this story as a mother who has witnessed it firsthand. For more than 20 years of my life, I was shaped by addiction, homelessness, and incarceration. I spent years believing that it was simply the life I was going to live. Today, I'm 36 years old, and I've been clean and sober for three and a half years. Recovery is possible. Change is possible. But people need opportunities. They need support. I'm living proof that a person can change the direction of their life. My message to anyone out there who might be addicted and suffering, have hope, hang on, hope and help are on the way. The truth is simple. People can recover. People do recover. We cannot keep building systems that leave people waiting until it's too late. The bill is put forward by my conservative colleagues like Luke Berthold and my bill, allowing court-ordered rehabilitation and treatment to turn recovery into reality. And we will not stop until meaningful change is delivered because something needs to change.

Addiction should never be a life sentence. My Private Member’s Bill C-240 supports abstinence-based recovery, giving offenders the opportunity to overcome addiction, restore their lives, and reduce the cycle of crime. Recovery works.

$6 million a year for Kitchener’s tent city?! Every dollar spent should be focused on getting people the support they need and helping them move toward safer, more stable housing. We need solutions that deliver results, not allow people to stay stuck.
