Residents of Kitchener. Municipal elections matter. The reality is not enough people are voting. In 2018 voter turnout was only about 28% and in 2022 it dropped to just over 20. I think part of the reason is that municipal politics can feel a little removed from everyday life. People might not know who their councillor is or even realize how many of the decisions that they make affect them in their everyday life. Those decisions matter. They affect housing, roads, transit, taxes, public safety, parks, and the future of your neighbourhood. I think a great councillor, someone who listens, who's accessible, works hard for the community, fiscally responsible and accountable, and is willing to stand up for the people they represent even when it's not easy. That's why it's so important that more people take part in this election. Know who you're voting for, ask questions, and make sure that your voice is heard. Municipal government has a direct impact on your everyday lives. Your vote is your opportunity to have a say in what happens in your community. I'm curious to hear from you. Comment below. Why do you think turnout is so low? What do you think would make a great councillor?
