The Waterloo Region has some of the brightest biomedical engineering minds anywhere in the world. We must remove regulatory burdens so that commercialization and job creation can flourish in Canada, rather than see it move to the United States. #innovation #ai #kitchener

So what are the region is home to some of the best biomedical engineering minds on the planet? We invent in the region, but too often we watch someone else commercialize, manufacture and capture the jobs and the wealth. From your experience, what are the biggest systematic barriers like high taxes, inflationary pressures or slow approvals that are pushing biotech commercialization and our talent to the US instead of keeping it here in Canada? Thank you for that question. I'm a proud alumnus of the University of Waterloo, so I understand it. It's a big problem, and I think a lot of it is frankly due to a lack of risk capital in the country here. As I stated in my proposal, in the case of biotechnology, where other areas have flourished is where there has been access to non-dilutive capital that you can get access to before the private sector will be ready to invest in the risk capital. So that gap is, I think, one of the biggest challenges that we're facing here in Canada, and we have to find a way to get through that. Thank you so much.
