I was honoured to attend the memorial service for the Battle of the Atlantic, remembering the Canadians who fought to keep vital supply lines open and made immense sacrifices to defend our country.

Kelly DeRidder, Member of Parliament for Kitchener Centre, makes time to honour the people who serve Canada and the people who have served before them. This page gathers her posts about veterans, reservists and remembrance in Kitchener and beyond.
Kelly has joined many local moments of remembrance. She attended the opening of the 2025 poppy campaign at Waterloo Branch 530, where the poppy flag was raised and the first poppy was presented. She took part in Remembrance Day ceremonies on November 11 and shared that she thought of her grandfather, who served. She also went to the Sikh Remembrance Day ceremony in Kitchener and shared the story of Private Buckam Singh, one of only ten Sikh soldiers known to have served in the Canadian military during the First World War. He is laid to rest in Kitchener Centre.
Kelly also welcomed Kitchener's new Veterans Crosswalk and thanked local government for making it possible. In March 2026 she supported a fundraiser for the 31 Combat Engineer Regiment (The Elgins) and praised local reservists, including those serving in Latvia. I am deeply honoured and humbled to have taken part in today’s Remembrance Day ceremonies. This day holds profound meaning, and I carry it with gratitude and reflection. I hope my grandfather, who served with courage, would feel proud of the way his legacy is remembered.

So proud that Kitchener now has its own Veterans Crosswalk, a powerful symbol of respect and remembrance. My deepest gratitude to our local government for honouring those who served and making this tribute possible. Thank you.

n in Punjab, India, in 1893, he immigrated to Canada and enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1915. Despite facing discrimination, Singh served with distinction in the 20th Battalion of the Canadian Infantry (Eastern Ontario Regiment). Standing alongside community members to honour the legacy of Sikh soldiers, was a powerful reminder of courage, sacrifice, and belonging. Their service is etched into our shared history. Lest we forget.
