AI will shape our economy, security and future. But if we don’t control our data, we risk giving away a critical national asset. Canada needs data sovereignty so Canadian data remains under Canadian control.

With the development of AI and considering data ownership with the mindset of cybersecurity, do you think Canada should be considering Canadian software as well as a Canadian cloud for storage of particular house business? I think that the storage is that's part of the agreement. Thank you for the question. So yes when it comes to data protections and looking at what may also be considered data sovereignty in this question and how we could examine that further. Certainly our current state is with our current supplier let's just say from co-pilot and Microsoft perspective. We have agreements and data residency assurances through our contractual obligations with Microsoft from a data storage perspective. So what that means for members and their staff is OneDrive, your SharePoint sites, any aspects of your work within the Microsoft suite. Those enjoy the protections of Canadian data residency. Now as you mentioned Canadian software companies, Microsoft is not technically a Canadian headquartered and owned company. As such one of the explorations we are considering as part of ongoing proofs of concept. To further examine how we can support members and ensuring we're looking at all aspects of their protection of their information and their use is we are exploring some other what we'll say Canadian companies around the AI field. Those have not yet materialized in an offering yet but they are in the works from a planning perspective so that we can examine further what it would look like if we were to offer more protections from was whether you know not just residency but what I'll say is independence and perhaps some aspects of control of the information. So these are areas we want to examine and explore further but the the other side to examine as well is the capabilities because certainly with some of these might come some trade-offs when it comes to the the features and what they might offer. Yeah thank you very much for that it's good to know that Canadian options are being explored because we know with data residency it's very important Canadian owned Canadian headquartered on Canadian soil. You mentioned agreement with Microsoft and I'm just curious inside of that agreement does it protect us from like the US Cloud Act? Would you like sure so yes thank you for the question so the US Cloud Act while I'm not an expert by any means in the legalities of it from a just a pure technical perspective when it comes to the House of Commons use of Microsoft as a technology the data for which we use within the platform so any of its applications we have assurances in our contractual agreements for Microsoft to contact the speaker and the law clerk and the various officials that we've put in all of our terms and conditions of our contracts with our suppliers so that does offer a good level of protection as we examine aspects of risk of the Cloud Act further there are aspects that we've are starting to notice and see where there could be some legal aspects that could ask for access to the information through court orders south of the border that we may not be able to to fully let's say intervene before those those orders happen so there's always jurisprudence and aspects for us to examine those those areas as we become a bit known about them but there are risks with the Cloud Act around that so having kind of rounding out the the answer is we don't know everything certainly about the aspects of the legalities but part of our exploration in other solutions such as a Canadian AI technology company is that we could certainly examine how the aspects of the Cloud Act would perhaps be minimized in in our use of the technology through other vendors thank you for your transparency about the US Cloud Act Kitchener is Canada's innovation capital I probably declare so we have some options right in my hometown that are working on solutions as we speak I just have one last question AI oh am I out of time okay AI is changing you know very rapidly and where do you see AI helping with workflows remaining as a tool in your toolbox to help increase efficiency where are some of the key areas in the house that we can implement it which may not be mentioned a few earlier I don't know if you want to repeat or if there's any others that we have further down envisioning to look at I think at the moment general productivity is another area where we can see some gain so summarization of public documents potentially summarization of meetings initial drafts of certain documents as well but I do think maintaining the accountability and the human loop is very important to anything that we would go forward with

Jim Balsillie’s incredible $4.5M donation will make a real difference for local families. With 1 in 9 Waterloo Region households relying on food banks, we need to ask why so many Canadians are struggling to afford groceries. The current government must act on affordability.
