At the forefront of my work as MP for Kitchener Centre is to ensure Canada finally gets serious about IP sovereignty and protecting the economic value of our innovation. We’ve known for years that this government’s policy failures have caused Canada to lose out on hundreds of billions of dollars in commercialized innovation here at home. But without a strategy to keep the innovation outcomes from taxpayer dollar investments here in Canada, we will continue to see IP and research talent flow south of the border. The government’s investments mean nothing without conditions or a strategy. #kitchener #innovation #ip

you're warning of 100 billion lost annually from unowned IP really hits home. It hits home because Kitchener startups are directly impacted from red tape, high taxes, no IP strategy and lack of policy that's preventing investment. Where is this failure coming from and what can be done to fully unleash Kitchener's innovation engine and reverse the damage from this lost decade? The failure comes from the stewards of the public money that they give the money away. They require that, for instance, you keep accounting so that you don't pay for a trip with it, of course. And yet there isn't an approach to saying, how do you manage this in a way that captures the benefits to Canada? And it's a policy inattention that is inexplicable and we paying a very, very sorry price for it. And my only question is how low does it have to go before people realize that this is where the prosperity is, this is where the good jobs are, this is where the tax base comes from, this is where the future philanthropists and venture capitalists come from. And if we don't address that upstream as a condition of funding at an institutional policy point of view rather than a downstream fragmented approach, it's just Einstein's definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome.
