Families in Kitchener Centre are stretching every dollar, and Kelly DeRidder has made affordability a focus of her work. In her maiden speech in the House of Commons, she spoke about parents making ends meet, young people hoping to afford a home, and local businesses working to stay afloat. She also says she reads every letter residents send her.
Back home, Kelly has met with the Waterloo Food Bank, Jennifer Scott of House of Friendship, Reception House Waterloo Region, and local realtor Faisal Susiwala to talk about food security, housing and rising costs. She invited neighbours to the Coldest Night of the Year walk at Cameron Heights Collegiate to support Ray of Hope Inc. She also featured Markatoo Fresh Produce on Victoria Street South for helping keep fresh food affordable.
In Ottawa, Kelly has spoken in the House of Commons on fuel affordability, taxes on gas and diesel, and the streaming tax. She wrote to the Minister of Housing in support of federal funding for Kitchener's Fire Station 8 and affordable housing project, which would create 281 affordable homes. Her constituency office has also helped residents with federal services, including a local family who received over $15,000 in backdated benefits after a CRA reassessment.
